As the spring reproductive season arrives earlier and lasts longer in northern latitudes, a fact owing to climate change, animals that can adapt their schedules stand a better chance of seeing their genetic information passed on to later generations, leading to a change in gene frequencies within populations.The shift could have substantial economic impacts as well. We don't usually need to think very much about our sleep - it's just a part of life that we take for granted. When we can't sleep, though, it can be a real problem. In fact, most of us will find it hard to sleep at some point in our lives. We have a word for it - insomnia. It's often just for a short time, perhaps when we're worried or excited. After a few days, things settle down and we get back to sleeping normally. However, we need sleep to keep our minds and bodies healthy. If we carry on sleeping badly, we start to notice the effects.
What is sleep?
Sleep is the regular period in every 24 hours when we are unconscious and unaware of our surroundings. There are two main types of sleep:

*
Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep

It comes and goes throughout the night, and makes up about one fifth of our sleep time. During REM sleep, our brain is very active, our muscles are very relaxed, our eyes move quickly from side to side and we dream.

*
Non-REM sleep

The brain is quiet, but the body may move around. Hormones are released into the bloodstream and our body repairs itself after the wear and tear of the day. There are 4 stages of non-REM sleep:

1. The muscles relax, the heart beats slower and body temperature falls - "pre-sleep".
2. Light sleep - we can still be woken easily without feeling confused.
3. "Slow wave" sleep - our blood pressure falls, we may talk in our sleep or sleep walk.
4. Deep "slow wave" sleep - we become very hard to wake. If we are woken, we feel confused.

We move between REM and non-REM sleep about five times throughout the night, dreaming more as we get toward the morning.

During a normal night, we will also have short periods of waking. These last 1 or 2 minutes and happen every 2 hours or so. We aren't usually aware of them. We are more likely to remember them if we feel anxious or there is something else going on - noises outside, our partner snoring etc.
How much sleep do we need?
Nine months and after
This depends mainly on how old we are.

* Babies sleep for about 17 hours each day.
* Older children only need 9 or 10 hours a night.
* Most adults need around 7-8 hours sleep each night.
* Older people need the same amount of sleep, but will often only have one period of deep sleep during the night, usually in the first 3 or 4 hours, after which they wake more easily. We also tend to dream less as we get older.

There are also differences between people of the same age. Most of us need 7-8 hours a night, but some (a few) people can get by with only 3 hours a night. It's not helpful to regularly sleep more than 7-8 hours each night.

The short periods of being awake feel much longer than they really are. So it's easy to feel that we are not sleeping as much as we actually are.

A kilted Scotsman was walking down a country path after finishing off a considerable amount of whisky at a local pub. As he staggered down the road, he felt quite sleepy and decided to take a nap, with his back against a tree.

All cats belong to a family called the felids and were thought to have evolved 12 million years ago. Domestic cats originated from African wild cats, which they are still closely related to. The first domestic cats were thought to have lived 8,000 years ago in Cyprus. Early settlers must have introduced the cats to the island, as there were no wild cats present.

Cats are depicted in Egyptian paintings and sculptures from 3,000 BC. They were used to control pests in grain stores and came to be worshipped by people. Anyone who killed a cat was severely punished and cats became so respected that when they died they were often mummified and entombed with their owners. From Egypt, cats were taken to Italy after the Romans invaded in 30 BC. It is thought that the Romans also introduced cats into Britain. Cats suffered a great deal in Medieval Britain. The people believed that they were associated with witches and the devil, and they were often tortured and burned. Cats in the Far East faced a happier life - they were seen as a sign of good luck and many of today's breeds originated from here. In Islam, cats are a symbol of purity.

Life span
Average lifespan is between 9 and 15 years, though they can sometimes live for over 20 years.

Distribution and Habitat in the wild
Wild cats can be found on every continent except Australia and Antarctica. They occupy a range of habitats, including forest, jungle, grassland and mountainous regions.

Behaviour in the wild
Wildcats (Felis silvestris), closest relatives to the domestic cat, are highly adaptable predators and although their main diet consists of rodents, they also feed on rabbits, hares, birds, amphibians, insects and reptiles. As they rely on small prey items, wildcats need to hunt regularly throughout the day to get enough food.

Wildcats are solitary and both males and females maintain territories. Males overlap ranges with females, but females will not overlap ranges with other females. Wildcats mate in February and March and after a gestation period of 63-65 days, females give birth to 2-6 young. The young stay with their mothers until they are 6 months old, but may stay with their siblings for a while longer.

Wildcats are nocturnal or crepuscular (active during twilight hours - dawn and dusk). Wildcats cannot roar, but they do use a variety of other sounds to communicate including growling, mewing, purring, hissing and spitting.

Pilot Checklist

After every flight, pilots fill out a form, called a gripe sheet which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems, document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight. Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are some maintenance complaints submitted by pilots and the solutions recorded by maintenance engineers. By the way, the airline these came from is the only major airline that has never, ever, had an accident.

When my parents come to visit, as in these holidays, I get flashbacks of childhood. Like when I was a kid, my mother had pat answers and special quips she dished out over and over. One of my least favorites was "Because I said no." I remember thinking what an unfair reply that was to a request.This is my memory of the process:

"Can I spend the night at Vicky's?""No.""Why not?""Because I said no."
Why couldn't she give me a decent reason when turning down my requests? She treats me like a child! She never says that to other adults! Humph!! (sound of feet stomping, door slamming here) I vowed that when I became a parent, I would not repeat the motherizms I grew up with, particularly that one. I would provide reasonable explainations to MY children. Well, I now have children making ridiculous requests and have come to realize that my memory of the discourse between my mother and I was probably not complete. Perhaps it went more like this little chat I recently had with my daughter:

"Can I spend the night at Emily's?"No.""Why not?""Because it's a school night.""But I can go to school with her tomorrow.""No. You'll be up late.""We'll go to bed early.""No. You always stay up late with Emily.""Why not? I promise we'll go to bed early!""No.""Why not?""Because it's a school night.""But what if we promise to go to bed early?""No.""Why not?""BECAUSE I SAID NO!"(sound of feet stomping, door slamming here, punctuated with a loud "It's not fair!" at the end)

Comments: We were at this hotel for a week in March 2007 and found it to be pretty good, however it was in need of a little refurbishment. I think it was a reasonable 3 star rather than 4 star. (The pool area is a bit small for the size of the hotel).

I can't understand the critisism of the food (I would like to eat in the restaurants that the critics go to) as I found the choice and the quality excellent and the waiting staff very friendly.

There was some noise at night from bars outside however you can't expect to come to a resort like this and have everything close up because you want to go to bed. No matter how late you go to bed you will have no problem wakening at 0720 hours. The time the workmen start on the road reconstruction, however, again, this is making improvements and wont be there forever.

All in all a good hotel with good staff and good food. What else does one require.

There's no question the friendship between affection-starved man-eater Marina (Anna Friel) and studious Holly (Michelle Williams) will spin out of control. The script by Goldbacher and Laurence Coriat paints Marina as spiteful from puberty on, her deceptions growing more vicious and unbelievable as the picture moves from the pair's 1970s girlhood into young adulthood.
Goldbacher, who made 1998's overlooked "The Governess," is most adept at visual storytelling, capturing intimate moments with breathtaking acuity. She's also got a couple of spirited actresses in her corner.
Williams drops her "Dawson's Creek" persona immediately, mastering a middle- class English accent and kindly, mousy demeanor. The actress' manner fits a girl whose mother has told her, by way of comfort, "Some girls are pretty, and some are smart."
Williams shines in a stolen moment, vividly framed by Goldbacher, where the teenage Holly finds herself in the bedroom of Marina's brother, on whom she has a mad, secret crush. Williams shows the girl's sneaky wonderment at being in this hallowed place. Those are his dirty clothes on the floor, his punk- rock posters on the wall.
Goldbacher delivers another remarkably visceral scene in which Holly suffers an emotional jolt. The camera adopts the character's-eye view; as she tries to flee the room, people around her become roadblocks, talking in slow motion and moving as if through Jell-O.
Friel has less to work with as the bad seed, but conveys her sadistic character's tortured bond to her friend. She turns a scene where Marina tells Holly, "There's no me without you," into something poignant instead of overwrought.
Kyle MacLachlan ("Sex and the City") makes an insinuating weasel as a professor who sparks romantic hopes in both young women. As Marina's cocktail- swilling mother, Trudie Styler (Sting's wife) cuts a glamorously wasted figure,

Superman is a comic book superhero, originally created by American writer Jerry Siegel and Canadian artist Joe Shuster and published by DC Comics. Created in 1932, and rejected by a number of publishers, the character first appeared in Action Comics #1 (June 1938). With a premise that taps into adolescent fantasy, Superman, also known as Clark Kent, is born Kal-El on the alien planet Krypton, before being rocketed to Earth as an infant by his scientist father moments before the planet's destruction. Adopted and raised by a Kansas farmer and his wife, the child is raised as Clark Kent, and imbued with a strong moral compass. Upon reaching maturity the character develops superhuman abilities, resolving to use these for the benefit of humanity. With the success of his adventures, Superman helped to create the superhero genre and establish its primacy within the American comic book.[1] Superman is today widely considered to be both one of the most famous and popular comic book superheroes of all time,[2] and an American cultural icon.[3][4][5][1]

Whilst referred to less flatteringly as "the big blue Boy Scout" by some of his fellow superheroes,[6] Superman is hailed as "The Man of Steel," "The Man of Tomorrow," and "The Last Son of Krypton," by the general public within the comics. As Clark Kent, Superman lives among humans as a "mild-mannered reporter" for the Metropolis newspaper The Daily Planet (the Daily Star in original stories). Here he works alongside reporter Lois Lane, with whom he is romantically linked. This relationship has been consummated by marriage on numerous occasions across varying media, and the union is now firmly established within the current mainstream comics continuity.

The character's cast, powers and trappings have slowly expanded throughout the years. Superman's backstory was altered to allow for adventures as Superboy, and other survivors of Krypton were discovered, including Supergirl and Krypto the Superdog. In addition, Superman has been licensed and adapted into a variety of media, from radio to television and film. The motion picture Superman Returns was released in 2006, with a performance at the international box office which exceeded expectations.[7] The character has been revamped and updated, most recently in 1986. John Byrne recreated the character, reducing Superman's powers and erasing several characters from the canon in a move which attracted media attention. Press coverage was again garnered in the 1990s with the Death of Superman, a storyline which saw the character briefly killed.

Superman has also held fascination for scholars, with cultural theorists, commentators and critics alike exploring the character's impact and role in America and the wider world. Umberto Eco discussed the mythic qualities of the character in the early 1960s, and Larry Niven has pondered the implications of a sexual relationship the character might enjoy with Lois Lane.[8] The character's ownership has often been the subject of dispute, with Siegel and Shuster twice suing for the return of legal ownership. The copyright is again currently in dispute, with changes in copyright law allowing Siegel's wife and daughter to claim a share of the copyright, a move DC parent company Warner Bros. disputes.

Who says swag suites are all about getting? Becki Newton, who plays deliciously catty Amanda on Ugly Betty, donated a silk green and white Diane von Furstenburg wrap dress (size 0, of course) to Working Wardrobes, a nonprofit organization that helps at-risk men and women move toward self-sufficiency with everything from job training to new clothing. Newton brought the dress to the Luxury Lounge's Marie Claire gifting suite and explained its special meaning: she'd worn it for her Ugly Betty screen test. "It was her lucky dress," said a charity rep. "She knows how much confidence the dress gave her, and she wanted to give that to someone else." Other donated dresses included Debra Messing's white drop-waist number by Ports (size 4), along with styles from Debra Messing, Adriana Barraza and Lisa Edelstein.
